101 Days of Christmas: Arthur Christmas Candy Sleigh

Arthur Christmas Candy Sleigh

My girls love family movie nights, and last week we picked up a copy of Arthur Christmas to watch as a family.

This is a cute Christmas movie that gives kids and parents a sneak peek at Santa’s behind-the-scenes operations, which include a high-tech command center run by hundreds of elves and a fulfillment system that rivals Amazon.com’s.

But what happens when a glitch causes one little girl’s gift to be missed on Christmas Eve? While Steve Christmas, who is next in line to be Santa and currently runs the operations center, thinks that it should be written off and forgotten (because the danger of Santa being seen and compromising the whole system is too great), Arthur Christmas — Steve’s awkward but kind-hearted brother — is determined to deliver the gift to this special little girl.

With the spunky Grandfather Christmas at his side, they take the old school sleigh — complete with (a few) reindeer — out on a mission to make things right.

Our girls really enjoyed this funny yet heartwarming movie, and because I’ve been looking for a reason to make gumdrop people like these, we decided to make an edible candy sleigh craft for Arthur & Grandfather Christmas:

Arthur Christmas Candy Sleigh

I couldn’t find big gumdrops, so we had to improvise a little, but I think they turned out so cute!

Supplies:

  • wooden round balls (3/4″ with a 3/16″ hole)
  • wooden dowels (3/16″)
  • toothpicks
  • gumdrops
  • jelly beans
  • craft paint
  • graham crackers
  • candy canes
  • hot glue or royal icing

Directions:

To make Arthur Christmas:

Cut the wooden dowel into 2″ lengths. Set a wooden ball at the top of one. Glue in place (optional). Paint eyes and hair and let dry.

Once dry, slide two green gumdrops on the dowel, fat sides together.

Cut two toothpicks in half. Slide green jelly beans onto two of the toothpick halves to form arms. Slide red jelly beans onto the remaining toothpick halves. Cut a white jelly bean in half and stick on the end of the toothpicks as feet.

Insert the arms and legs into the gumdrop body.

To make Grandfather Christmas:

Cut the wooden dowel into 2″ lengths. Set a wooden ball at the top of one. Glue in place (optional). Paint eyes, mouth and beard and let dry.

Once dry, slide one white gumdrop and one red gumdrop on the dowel, fat sides together.

Cut two toothpicks in half. Slide white jelly beans onto two of the toothpick halves to form arms. Slide red jelly beans onto the remaining toothpick halves. Cut a red jelly bean in half and stick on the end of the toothpicks as feet.

Insert the arms and legs into the gumdrop body.

To make the sleigh:

For an edible craft, use royal icing to assemble your sleigh; otherwise use hot glue.

Holding the candy cane with the hook facing up, add a generous amount of glue or icing to the surface of the candy cane. Attach to the graham cracker. Repeat with a second candy cane.

Break a piece of candy cane off to fit between the two candy cane hooks and secure in place.

Once dry, set Grandfather & Arthur Christmas on the sleigh. Secure them with glue or icing if desired.
