In the world we live in today, it’s very easy to be distracted by so many things.
We have so many options available to us, it can be overwhelming to choose the most important things. I mean, have you tried shopping for disposable diapers lately?
I took my son and his very pregnant girlfriend shopping at Babies R Us after their baby shower. I had never been in there before and I was amazed and overwhelmed at everything new parents have available to them. Her friends and family had bought lots of cute things, but not many of the things that really mattered.
My goal was to buy the things they needed but didn’t get at their shower. There was no extra money for cutesy fun stuff, we had to get the things we needed that would make their lives easier as they cared for their new daughter.
The things that would make the most impact on their new life together. Things like a breast pump, and a car seat. A big box of wipes and cloth diapers for burps cloths.
I really wanted to buy some cute girly stuff. Some frilly pink things, but those were not the important things at this point.
Focus on the more important things.
As we try to focus on the important things in life, it is very easy to get distracted. We get caught up in all the little things that really don’t matter. We need to take a step back and assess,
“What are the high priority things in my life that I need to focus on?”
“What areas can I make the biggest difference in by paying some attention to?”
In your home…
Keeping clutter at a minimum
Keeping the dishes caught up
Making beds can make a big difference in how a room feels
With your kids…
Reading to and with them
Spending time working on things together
Give them experiences instead of things
With your spouse…
Give him a kiss AND a hug before he goes out the door and when he returns
Put away your smartphone when you’re with him
Plan your work so you’re finished by the time he gets home (if you must work in the evening, don’t let it be every night)
In your work…
Decide what things will make the most impact to the bottom line
Don’t waste precious time with busywork
Turn off all distractions and focus on those high impact things such as writing, research, phone calls or networking
Do your best to get good, restful sleep at night
Fuel your body with the right foods for energy and nutrition
Take short breaks and do nothing at all!

Cooking gourmet meals
Buying your kids the newest and latest gadgets
Making sure that your kids always look clean and pristine
Making sure that you always look polished and proper
