I’ve said before that one of the things I love is that green, frugal and intentional living so often intersect, so when I make a small change to live more frugally, it’s often “green” as well. Similarly, when I make a green change, it’s often a simpler, more intentional way to live as well.

Homemade toiletries are a perfect example of this principle. when you simplify your beauty routine and choose homemade toiletries over dozens of store-bought varieties, you’re often simplifying and living more intentionally, saving money AND avoiding questionable chemicals, plastic waste, etc.

Do I think everybody should give up all of their favorite products and make everything from scratch? No, I really don’t. But it is worth giving some of these a try and sticking with the ones that work for your family!

Here are a few homemade toiletries you might consider.

I love whipped body butter, but to be honest, it’s one of those things I rarely by because the good stuff is so expensive. This homemade body butter recipe looks so creamy and divine, though, and I’m anxious to try it with some of my favorite scents.

Like body butter, body scrub is one of those little luxuries that I tend to not want to spend money on, even though I really enjoy using it. With three or four simple ingredients (oil, sugar or salt, essential oil and, in some recipes, honey), you can quickly and easily make your own without worrying about the cost!

Homemade toothpaste might seem a bit extreme, and if the fluoride is important to you, this won’t work. But if you’re looking for a fluoride free toothpaste, making your own is much less expensive than purchasing some of the “green” brands on the market. And hey, as you’ll see, this recipe can double as deodorant to!

And finally, if the aluminum in deodorants worries you or you’re concerned about stopping your body’s sweat response with an antiperspirant, this recipe is for you. I regularly use homemade deodorant, and truly, it works as well as the clinical-strength stuff (which I have to buy when I was postpartum due to hormonal issues), is so cheap and easy to make and is free of chemicals and additives!
