Unusual, Fun and Surefire Ways to Increase Productivity in 2013

boost productivity while having fun

For me, productivity isn’t about busyness, or having fancy apps. For me, productivity is all about being peaceful, focused and intentional.  However, sometimes, this is easier said than done. There are deadlines to be met, projects to be finished, errands to be run. In the midst of all these, peace gets pushed to the backburner.

However, in the last few months, I have been intentionally working on being more peacefully productive. It doesn’t mean I work any slower or get less things done. It just means I do them without that sense of rushed-ness or that awful tight feeling in my chest. It means that I work and play with pure joy. It means that I don’t get snappy or snarky with my husband or daughter while trying to work on a project.

Here are some unusual but fun and surefire ways to increase your own sense of peaceful productivity:

Take a nap.

That’s right. Sometimes, sleeping on the job does get the job done. I’ve noticed that a short 30-minute or 45-minute nap does me a world of good. My head is clearer, I’m more excited about my work and the rest gives me the energy I need to finish things, fast.

Also, a nap often means you wake up with some great ideas that may have been in your subconscious but couldn’t get out because of everything else you’d stuffed in your head.  Try it. Today.

Move around.

Whether you work from home or a cubicle, chances are you spend way too much time in front of the laptop. Get up, swing your arms around {yes, you may get strange looks from co-workers, but they’ll get used to it!} or just go for a short walk to get a drink of water, stretch out your legs and get some fresh air.

Moving around does you wonders in terms of productivity. Your eyes get a rest, your mind gets a change of scene and you come back feeling refreshed and energized.

Drop everything and play.

Sometimes, when you’re banging your head against the laptop and nothing productive is getting done, it is better to just drop it and go out to play. Either really play with the kids or just relax with a book, dance to some music or meditate. Doing something totally unrelated to the task at hand often, frees up your mind and gives you the ability to view it differently when you come back to it.

While taking a ‘play’ break, don’t check your emails, try to find a solution to your problem or think ‘work’. Just play. Have fun. You’ll be amazed at how peaceful, centered and focused you are when you return to your desk.

Set a timer or an imaginary deadline.

What? Deadlines and peace? But hear me out. Sometimes, your productivity needs a shot in the arm and a deadline is a great way to do that. I shared this in my easy guide to productivity earlier and it is worth sharing again. Just fix a deadline in your head and then, with single-mindedness work to meet it. Since you’re not actually racing the clock, you wouldn’t get that tight feeling in your chest but because you know you have 15 minutes to finish the task, you’ll work on it with complete concentration. Yes, it is a trick for your mind and it does take practice but it is awesome.
