With fall in full swing and winter just around the corner, more and more families are popping up with colds and the flu. When most of us get sick, we’re often quick to turn our attention back to ourselves to get better. But what about getting ourselves better before we catch that bug, so that we never have to nurse ourselves back to feeling good again?

Today I want to share with you five foods that you can eat starting right now to boost your immune system. That way, while everyone else is at home nursing their coughs and runny noses, you can be going on with your busy life without missing a beat.

All you need to do is keep loading up on these foods and you’re immune system will be set all flu-season long:

1. Garlic

This food not only helps flavor all your favorite dishes, but since it is high in sulfuric compounds, it will help your body combat infection and bacteria. The best way to use garlic as an immune booster is to enjoy it raw as the cooking process takes away some of its powerful antibacterial sulfur enzymes.

2. Fermented Foods

While the name doesn’t sound too pretty, the benefits of eating fermented foods are fantastic.

Any unprocessed fermented foods boost the immune system by increasing the antibodies that fight infectious disease. The obvious fermented food that is most common in many people’s diets is yogurt. Other foods you can find the same immune-boosting response from are kefir, miso, sauerkraut, tempeh, kombucha, and kimchee.

3. Spices

Many spices that are perfect for adding to fall and winter dishes not only warm us up, but also keep us healthy by fighting off inflammation in the body, which can lead to catching colds and flu more easily. Some spices to give your body an immune-system boost are turmeric, allspice berries, cumin, black pepper, ginger, cloves, and cinnamon.

4. Mushrooms

Many mushrooms can pack an immunity-system punch, but the ones that really turn it up are shiitakes, maitakes, and reishi mushrooms.

What makes them so great? They contain selenium, riboflavin, and niacin, which helps to reduce the risk of developing a more severe virus. They also are known to be antiviral and anti-bacterial, so many of the viruses you become exposed to will be warded off with no problems.

5. Broccoli

Did you know that broccoli has more vitamin C than an orange? In fact, a number of other foods do as well, such as papayas, kiwi, strawberries, and kale. What’s great about getting any food that’s high in vitamin C is that it increases white blood cell production, which means that when a virus comes in, it’s knocked out before you start feeling any symptoms at all.

Getting your immune system built up before you ever have to spend a day in bed is as easy as treating your body right by giving it healthy and highly nutritious foods. Even if you’ve already been exposed to a bug this year, you can start loading up on these delicious foods now and fight off the next round, which we can be sure is just around the corner!
