It’s hard to believe that Christmas is over and the new year is rapidly approaching. {Where did the time go?}  As holiday decorations get packed away for another year and as New Year’s resolutions are made, it is a great time to evaluate our home decor.

Usually after Christmas, I’m ready for a refreshed look at my house. I don’t want to put everything back exactly the way it was before Thanksgiving and Christmas.  And…I’ve found that I love my house even more when it is simplified and refreshed.

If you’d like to refresh your home decor, begin by asking yourself these questions.

  • Do I love it?
  • Is it in style? (If it isn’t and you still love it, don’t trash it because trends are cyclical)
  • I’m I tired of looking at it?
  • Do I need to get rid of it or put it in storage?
  • Does it just need a new place in my home?

Here are 5 simple ways to refresh your home decor:

1.  Declutter Your Space

Begin in one room and slowly declutter drawers, closets, file cabinets, etc. Don’t do too much at once because you might get overwhelmed and want to quit.  In addition to simplifying what doesn’t immediately “meet the eye”, declutter your home decor.  Small accessories tend to be dust collectors, so focus on keeping larger statement pieces. More isn’t necessarily better and little knick knacks are more time consuming to dust.

Consider donating items you no longer need or want to local charities or thrift shops.

2.  Rearrange Your Furniture and Accessories

Consider rearranging the furniture placement in your living spaces. It is so much fun to play with different furniture arrangements.  Even if you think you won’t like a certain arrangement try it for a few days – you might be quite surprised.

Moving accessories around is a completely free and easy way to refresh your home. Try grouping similar items together for more visual impact and don’t be afraid to try groupings that are unusual or “out of the box.”  You might be a trend setter!

3.  Repurpose and Recycle Items You Have

There are a million different tutorials and ideas in the blogosphere on repurposing and recycling various “outdated” or unwanted items.  I’ve used old windows for wall decor, old electrical insulators for beautiful accessories and thrift store or yard sale “junk” for instantly-updated-with-spray-paint decor in my home.

Use items you already have and give them new life!

4.  Paint An Accent Wall

Paint is an inexpensive way to give your home an instant face-lift. Accent walls provide a great punch of color or texture if a stenciled pattern is used.

5.  Go Green With Plants and Cut Flowers

One of the easiest ways to bring life and color into your home is with live plants and cut flowers. I must confess that I don’t have a green thumb — at all — but I love cut flowers.  They brighten our home and they make me smile.  My favorite indoor plants are bonsai and various succulents, and my favorite flowers are daisies and tulips.

I’m excited about refreshing my home by using these simple methods and I hope you are inspired to do the same!
