Form Versus Function…Which Do You Focus on for Your Home?

Sean and I joke that we don’t always balance each other out very well because we’re a lot alike: both introverts, both spenders, both sarcastic.

But one area where we do balance each other out is interior design.

I am type-A to my core, and while I appreciate beautiful design, my mantra is really “function, function, function”. I want furniture that will serve our family well, make life easier and — if at all possible — serve more than one purpose. Like Havertys’ built-in underbed storage or this table with leaves.

Sean, on the other hand, is an artist through and through, and his primary focus is on the way furniture looks. He has fairly eclectic taste — modern (but not too modern) and minimalist with a little bit of relaxed beach style to balance it out.

We rarely make big changes to all of our decor at once, preferring to update a little at a time as we go. And, true to our personalities, I notice when something needs updating because it’s no longer meeting our family’s needs while Sean can happily spend hours browsing Houzz for new ideas just because.
