Whether you work because you have to or because you’ve found your passion and you can’t imagine not working, juggling motherhood and a career is never easy.
In Mommy Brings Home the Bacon, working mother Nikki Mark addresses this tough topic with sensitivity and a whimsical look at just what happens to the bacon that mommy brings home everyday.
It’s funny, because if you ask my 5.5 year old what she wants to be when she grows up, she says, “What mommy is,” but she can’t really put into words what that is quite yet. Our 7 year old vacillates between different career paths on a daily basis — from archaeologist to wildlife photographer and from Olympic swimmer to artist. And our 4 year old proudly proclaims that she wants to be a mommy.
What I love about this story is that Nikki approaches all of these choices with respect. In the story, the main character says:
“One day our teachers asked what our moms do when we’re at school. Some said their moms stay home to take care of their family and the whole house, which sounds like a lot. My mommy says, whether moms work at home or somewhere else, they are all working really hard.”
