reusable glass straws

Over the past year, we’ve been slowly eliminating plastic from our kitchen. Although I know many people do this because of concerns about the chemicals in the plastic leaching into their food, that has not been our primary motivation. Instead, it’s the desire to purchase quality, lasting items that can be repurposed rather than recycled or thrown away that’s motivating this change.

So far, we’ve eliminated plastic storage containers, plastic dishes & cups, and some plastic kitchen tools in favor of Pyrex storage, repurposed jars for drinking, ceramic dishes for the entire family and a variety of glass and stainless steel kitchen tools.

We still use plastic measuring cups and spoons (replacing those is next on my list!), plastic spatulas/serving spoons and plastic forks and spoons from Ikea (for the girls) because we don’t have enough silverware to get us through three meal without them.

strawesomeThe most recent change we made was to add these beautiful glass straws from Strawesome to our kitchen.

I’ve had the privilege of working with Daedra from Strawesome over the past two years in my role with Simple Living Media and Deal Seeking Mom, but I hadn’t yet tried the glass straws for myself. However, I love the idea of glass straws, not only because of their permanence but also for their design and the practicality of larger “smoothie straws” for thicker drinks.
They are also beautifully designed, which just adds to their charm and appeal.

Some people caution that you should not give kids glass, but I strongly disagree, as I’ve shared before. Our kids don’t often break something — I’m not sure anything has broken in the last year — and even if something does break, we simply tell everyone to freeze while we clean it up.

That said, even though the straws are made from high-quality, strong glass, the baby probably won’t be allowed to use them for another year or so, not so much because of her age but because, at two years old, she can be a bit strong-willed, and I wouldn’t put it past her to slam one down or throw it across the room. Our second daughter, on the other hand, would have been fine using them at two years old!
