Google Reader: A Must-Have for Bloggers

Lately, I have been reflecting on the challenges that we can face as bloggers. For everything that is awesome about blogging, there are also things that are really tough. Within this section are things like keeping yourself organized, staying inspired, planning your posting schedule well, etc. The list goes on!

I thought that it would be helpful to share a few tools that I use to help me with the less glamorous side of blogging. Today I want to talk a little bit about a tool that I love and I don’t know what I would do without, Google Reader.

What is Google Reader?

Google Reader is an RSS reader. Most blogs provide what is called an RSS (Really Simple Syndication) Feed, which essentially takes all of the posts from that blog and puts it into a nice little package that an RSS reader, like Google Reader, can read.

Google Reader, in that case, allows you to insert the RSS feeds of various different blogs, and view the posts all in one place! Great right?

So…how does this help me?

Well, if you aren’t already using Google Reader or a similar RSS reader, you are missing out! By using Google Reader you can view every single blog that you would like to keep an eye on, all in one place. If you are someone who reads a lot of blogs everyday (and if you are a blogger yourself then you probably should be!) then this will save you so much time! I reckon that it cuts hours out of my day! Plus, it helps me to remember which blogs I want to look at every day.

I find Google Reader so useful because, by subscribing to many different blogs on or around the topics I blog about, it provides me with a near-constant supply of good quality inspiration and up-to-date news about what is going on within the various niches that I blog about!

If you don’t use Google Reader already, I really think you should try it out. You never know, it might just change your life!

How can I get Google Reader?

It’s easy, just visit the Google Reader website. If you already have a Google account, then it will just be added as part of your account.

To follow your first feed, simply click the subscribe button on the Google Reader homepage and put in the URL of a blog you want to follow. Most of the time it will find the feed automatically!

Bonus

If you are interested in using Google Reader and have an iPad, I highly recommend using Google Reader in conjunction with a fantastic app called Flipboard. It puts all of your unread blog posts into a beautiful magazine style layout that makes everything such a pleasure to read!

Whether you are a current Google Reader user or not, is it going to be part of your ongoing blogging strategy? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
