Make a Plan {31 Days to Your Goal}

If you’re just joining us, be sure to start at the beginning of the 31 Days to Your Goal series!

Once you’ve decided on your goal and set milestones, it’s time to make a plan to actually make it happen. I’m not a fan of spending a lot of money on things like exercise equipment or organizing solutions before you start to make progress on your goal, but I am a fan of gathering what you need, making appointments with yourself and setting yourself up for success in general.

To start, ask yourself these questions:

  • Do you need to schedule appointments with yourself? (Time to exercise, project time, bed time, etc.)
  • What supplies do you need to pursue your goal? (Exercise clothes, a journal, recipes, etc.)
  • Do you need to rearrange or reorganize an area of your home? (Reading corner, healthy snack drawer, etc.)
  • Do you have a way to track your progress? (A chart, calendar, checklist, etc.)

Little things like not knowing where your tennis shoes are when it’s time to exercise or not having a comfortable place to read can actually be fairly big mental obstacles to pursuing a new goal (“Oh, forget it — I’ll just do it later!”), so taking the time to think through those obstacles ahead of time — and to address them as they pop up — is an important part of preparing yourself for success.

Remember, this doesn’t mean you need to invest in new exercise clothes or a collection of fancy cookbooks. You can do this without spending a lot of money by designating an old pair of sweatpants and a t-shirt as your exercise clothes or printing recipes from the internet. I’m not sure why our natural inclination is to buy something new to pursue a new goal, but it’s actually a lot more effective to make do with what you have and use those purchases as a reward than it is to go out and spend a lot of money upfront!

What do you need to do to make it easier to pursue your goal?
