This is a recent glass-etching project that I did for a friend to highlight his favorite basketball team, but you can etch nearly anything on a glass to easily personalize it.

To start, you’ll need to round up some items. The most common way to etch glass at home is to use etching cream, although professionals use a sandblaster.

  • etching cream
  • contact paper or other stencil material
  • cutting knife
  • glass

Once you’ve gathered your materials, you’ll want to start by making a stencil. There are many different stencil methods to use.

If you don’t have a Silhouette or Cricut machine, you can mark your stencil lines with pen or pencil and cut them out with the hobby knife.

Next, we simply mount the stencils onto the glass and tape around the edges to protect areas that we don’t want to be etched, as you can see below:

With that in place, it’s time to etch the glass. Using the etching cream is very simple. To do this, you simply smear the cream over the stencil and wait about fifteen minutes. Then wash off and remove the stencil as I have done below.

Keep in mind that etching cream is highly toxic, so you want to do this in a well-ventilated area and avoid getting it on your skin.

Pretty simple right?

These make great personalized gifts, and you’re not limited to mugs. Try etching Pyrex dishes, wine glasses, windows, or even wine bottles!

Have you tried glass etching? What team would you want etched on a glass mug?
