Simplifying for Fall: Bedrooms and Bathrooms {Day 4}

Simplify for Fall Challenge with @lifeyourway #simplifyingforfall

Today’s Day 4 of the Simplify for Fall Challenge, and we’re tackling the bedrooms and bathrooms!

Let’s start with a confession: I think I overestimated my ability to get things done this week. Not only am I coming off the high-stress week with last week’s ebook launch, but I still have some work to do, so I’m getting a later start than I hoped each day.

Also? It takes a lot longer to update this post throughout the day then I expected!

So all of that to say that I’m feeling a little loopy — like I’m being pulled in too many directions — and definitely not meeting all of my goals.

But I’m going to keep pushing forward because I am getting stuff done, and it feels SO good to walk into the laundry room or open a kitchen cabinet or get the girls clothes because those areas are so organized and clutter-free.

I’m focusing less on the actual cleaning and more on the organizing, because we have some out-of-town guest coming next month, and I know we’ll deep clean before their visit anyway!

Okay, with that out of the way, let’s look at today’s areas — bedrooms and bathrooms:

Simplify for Fall Challenge: Clothes & Laundry Room

Our bedroom is fairly uncluttered, but our wardrobe — where we keep our clothes because we use the master closet as a nursery — is a bit cluttered. We’ve been homeschooling in our room,  so I keep homeschooling supplies in there, and the ones that don’t fit in our boxes are shoved in the closet. I’ve also been keeping books in there, not to mention the scrapbooks I am working on for the girls and extra pillows. Oh, yeah…and clothes! Sean’s side is no better, with a space heater, stack of magazines, extra cover for our couch, etc.

I definitely need to get some of this stuff out of our wardrobe and straighten up what’s left! I’d also like to get some of the books off my nightstand, which is a bit full these days.

The girls’ room is declared a disaster area at least once a week, and although we’re working hard to stay on top of it with daily clean ups, part of the problem is that their crafts and special toys seem to expand regularly. I’m going to limit their access to loose paper and remind them again not to tear pages out of coloring books, because I think paper floating around contributes to at least half the clutter!

I also bought them each a little crate to use on their bed for special toys. I know being able to keep these things close is important to them; the problem is that the collection grows so rapidly (especially the ones our 5-year-old creates; she’s quite the hoarder!), so I’m hoping these small crates will provide some natural boundaries.

I’m also going to clean out the guest room closet, which holds extra blankets, some old books from my grandparents, etc. I’m not sure what I’m going to do with it yet, but we’ll figure that out tomorrow!

Simplifying for Fall: Bedrooms and Bathrooms

Our bathroom needs a good overhaul! I bought new towels, but this time I stuck to 8 — the amount that will fit in one load and enough to get us through one week (I reuse my towels; Sean does not). I also got some containers to hold our extra toiletries, since I’ve been buying in bulk more often and those extras are cluttering up the space.

We have some extra toothbrushes and hair brushes (and who knows what else!) that I’m going to declutter as well.

The girls bathroom is actually where they keep their craft supplies, and we reorganize that area regularly. I’m hoping that limiting their loose paper (see above) will reduce the frequency of those overhauls!

I’ll be posting updates here throughout the day. You can also see them in real time by following me on Instagram (@mandiehman) or Pinterest (@lifeyourway). I’m moving slowly today, working on some work tasks that have been neglected this week and cleaning in between those  projects. But I did get my wardrobe and nightstand done:

I moved all of the homeschooling stuff either to the top shelf or the wardrobe upstairs, relocated my to-be-read books to an empty kitchen shelf, and sorted and purged what was left. The result is a clean nightstand and a much emptier wardrobe, which feels so good!

This afternoon, I pulled everything out of the bathroom wardrobe, moving extras and travel items to individual bins, purging some unused stuff and throwing away anything that was expired.

I love having this area neat and clean and uncluttered; it just makes a difference in my whole attitude and perspective!
