It’s often said of parenthood, “The days are long, but the years are short.”

I snapped this picture of our girls’ big wheel parked out in the yard — ready and waiting for a new day — early one morning last week, and I couldn’t help but think about that quote.

When the baby-turned-toddler still isn’t sleeping through the night and the pre-schooler throws temper tantrums and the big girls argue when you say the sky is blue, parenting is exhausting and we often hold our breath waiting for bedtime and the end of another day.

But when we look back and our firstborn is about to turn 8 and our baby-turned-toddler is really almost 3, it seems like it’s gone by in the blink of an eye.

Nester reminds us every summer that we only have 18 summers with each of them, and sometimes I think we need that perspective to get us through the hard days without wishing them away.

Because in another blink of the eye, we will be looking back on all 18 of them and wondering where they went.
