As moms we love making lists. So, before any building work can commence, we suggest writing out a list of goals of what you wish to achieve in your home. What is the purpose of your renovation? Perhaps you want to extend your kitchen or living area or maybe you want to create extra storage space, as we can never have enough of that! Having a defined goal in mind will allow you to better brief your builder and keep the work in check!

Speak to your Neighbours

As moms, we love talking to one another whether it be about the weather or school activities, so why not talk to your neighbours who have done similar work to their home so you can get an understanding of the opportunities and pitfalls of the project. We like to be prepared, so it will be worthwhile to know about any potential issues that may crop up and ways to avoid them.

Ask the Experts

Don’t be afraid to call up your local builder’s merchants and ask questions. Experts in the building field should have all the information you need to hand to help put your mind at ease. There isn’t anything wrong with asking for advice, it will allow you to make an informed decision, as building work can often come at a hefty cost! They will also have the latest information around building regulations, insulation, as well as the latest trends in renovation.

Get Multiple Quotes

We all love a family day out at Home Depot or Ikea so take advantage of your next trip and make notes of the reputable showrooms to give you a clear idea of the type of finishes you want for your home renovation and how much these are likely to cost. This will not only help with your budget but will save you having to make decisions at short notice in the middle of your building work. Visit multiple places to compare costs and work quality to ensure you choose the right fit for your home.

Plan for the unforeseen

So, now that you have your budget in mind you will also want to add in any expenses that you may not have anticipated. Think contingency fund! This way you shouldn’t have any nasty surprises in terms of additional costs during and at the end of your building work. Sometimes, no matter how well thought out our plan is, there can be some issues that will put a spanner in the works!

Strive for the Best

Attention to detail is everything for us moms. Call us pedantic but aesthetics is important. As well as the all important finishing touches, we must be mindful that all doors, appliances and electrical and plumbing fixtures are compliant. This is something to ask the experts when it comes to checking that current building codes and regulations are in working order. When choosing our electric wall fires this was something we had to consider.

After a long hard day there is nothing more satisfying than a long, relaxing shower. Therefore, improving the water pressure to all your showers and taps should not be overlooked. You can install a booster pump to pressurise your hot and cold water throughout the house. However, your water storage tanks may need to be upgraded or changed to suit the booster pumps. This is a key piece of information to know to ensure the pressure in your water outlets is at your preferred level.
