A couple weeks ago, I wrote about the balance between obedience and allowing our kids to have their own opinions. I said, “Sometimes immediate obedience is a matter of safety, and in order to trust our children to walk through parking lots, to play outside by themselves and to become independent, we need to know that when we say ‘Stop!’, they stop.”

Little did I know that I’d have to put my money where my mouth is so soon after writing that, but Sean cut his hand pretty badly yesterday morning as he was trying to catch a falling coffee mug that basically exploded in his hand as it hit the counter. As we realized the severity of the situation and the need to go to the ER, I began issuing commands to our three oldest girls, and without question, argument or bickering, they obeyed. By the time we got to the car, they were buckled in and waiting for us. When we arrived at the new hospital by our house, they followed me like little ducks as we tried to figure out where to go. And as we sat in the waiting room not knowing how long we would be there, they were quiet, respectful and obedient.

I love those four little girls and my heart could have burst I was so proud of them!

(Sean’s okay, by the way — he’s still in some pretty good pain, but the doctor closed the wound with liquid stitches and bandaged it up good, and it should heal just fine!)

This week I’m sharing some of my favorite summertime inspiration from the past couple of months. As always, check out what I’m reading to see the other posts that make me stop and think. You’ll find new posts all week long!
