Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow in the Life of Kat

Each week we run an interview as part of our “Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow in the Life of…” series. The interviewees share how their past has shaped who they are today as well as who they hope to be in the future. We’re starting with the Life Your Way contributors, but I’d love to include readers as well. If you’d like to participate, just send me an email at [email protected] and I’ll send you a questionnaire!

Today’s interview is with Kat of Inspired To Action:

1. Looking back on your childhood, what events do you think shaped who you are today?

I never knew my mom and I think that has certainly inspired me to be the best mom I can be. This is my one chance to experience the mother/child relationship, so I want to give it all I have and enjoy every moment.

Because my wonderful Dad was raising us all by himself, my grandparents played a more integral role in my upbringing than they might have otherwise. My grandmother planted seeds of Faith in my heart and my grandfather sparked my love for music and technology.

Ironically, no one in my family is athletic. I’m not sure where that came from, but with no one to really compete with, it forced me to be self motivated, a very helpful characteristic for a stay at home mom and a blogger.

2. Were you always inspired?

I think I’ve always been a passionate person. I just love life. I love learning I love the blank canvas of each morning. I love that who I am today, with whatever faults I have, is not who God made me to be. The best is yet to come. I am in the act of becoming the person the God of the Universe deemed worthy of creating.

I’ve always been inspired by music and words. I remember being 7 years old and pouring over the lyrics of a cassette tape before listening to it.

I’ve only recently become a “writer”, though. It’s a challenge for me, but I love connecting with people and writing is such great way to encourage and inspire.

3. How would you describe yourself today?

I feel that the past few years have helped me pinpoint what I truly love and what brings me life. All those things have come together and compliment one another.

As I work to become a better mother, I have more wisdom to share on the blog. The more I refine my thoughts through writing, the better I become at enacting them with my children.

4. What do you most love about your life?

Honestly, I love how entrepreneurial it is. There’s no one telling me I have to do things a certain way, in certain timeframe. As a blogger and a mother I have to be self motivated. I really like that. It challenges me and refines me.

My husband also works from home, I love that we can all shoot hoops with my 3 year old at 9:52 in the morning.

My life feels very free right now.

5. What would other people be surprised to know about you?

My closet is super messy. Exploding might describe it well. I write a good bit about productivity and organization, but that’s not naturally who I am.

I tend to be creative and kind of all over the place, but I’ve seen the value of organization so I’ve forced myself to incorporate it into my life. It benefits my kids and my own sense of peace when our house is in order. But it so goes against my natural tendencies that its exhausting. So I let my personal spaces be as messy as they want to be.

I hope you’ll still be my friend, Mandi. 🙂

6. Where do you see yourself in 5 years? 10 years?

Ever improving. My biggest fear is becoming stagnant and complacent. I hope that in 5 years I am even more focused than I am now.

I’d like to compete in races with my kids and maybe even create with them. Writing, music or whatever they’re into. I think that would be amazing – to collaborate with my children.

In 10 years, I think I’d like to do more public speaking. I’ve just started this year and I love it.

7. What legacy do you hope to leave behind?

A well worn path to Jesus. I can’t bring people hope, peace or joy. All I can do is lead the way to the One who has unfailingly brought those things into my life.

It seems especially appropriate that Kat’s interview is running today, while she’s in the Philippines with Compassion International. Not only is Kat seeing the work that Compassion does firsthand, but she’s also reconnecting with a part of her heritage. And yesterday she shared the story of her reunion with members of her extended family. Today, she’s triple dog daring us to take action. Will you accept her dare?

Kat blogs at Inspired To Action, a site dedicated to helping moms develop the habits and skills they need to effectively manage their homes and raise children who are prepared to change the world. Kat loves music, running, technology, Jesus and Tex-Mex food. Not necessarily in that order.
