6 Reliable Remedies to Achieve Pampered Complexion

When beauty fads go viral faster than Emily Ratajkowski’s selfies, we need to be picky about the trends we try. From the jade roller to hydrating eye masks, new cosmetic crazes come and go, especially in the skincare industry— so how do we separate the over-hyped hacks from the reliable remedies that truly work? After all, not everyone has the luxury of splurging on ruby facials and diamond-infused snake venom serums (or whatever’s popular with celebs today).  Fortunately, even without the Rodeo drive budget, you can still achieve that classically pampered complexion. The key is simple: it’s all about using tried-and-true ingredients with proven results. To narrow down the top choices, we collected the most valuable skincare advice recommended by Beverly Hills dermatologists.

1. Drink tons of water

Let’s begin with the simplest rule of all: drinking water. Surely you’ve heard it before, but we’ll stress it again.

According to Dr. Susan Evans, Beverly Hills Dermatologist, who treats many celebrity clientele, “Water will both hydrate your skin and flush out the toxins that can damage your complexion.” By nourishing and purifying your entire body, water helps your skin appear plumper and brighter to minimize signs of aging. However, when you’re dehydrated, your skin gets parched, leading to dullness, dryness, and dark circles (AKA raccoon eyes).

Your daily dose of H2O should be 6-8 glasses per day, says the Mayo Clinic.

2. Antioxidants are your friend (forever)

From patios to poolsides, we all love some fresh air. One problem: the city is filled with tons of wrinkle-causing culprits–pollution, wind, sun– the list goes on. So, as much as we enjoy walking around town and spending weekends outdoors, we need to protect our skin first so we have the best complexion.

“Adding topical antioxidant ingredients, like vitamin C, resveratrol, and green tea to your morning skincare regimen can help pre-empt this oxidative skin damage,” says Tsippora Shainhouse, MD, FAAD, board-certified dermatologist in Beverly Hills. The Optima Face Cream from EMK contains antioxidants from natural sources like Sea Buckthorn, Coffee Bean, and Agave Cactus Bioplacenta.

“Look for ingredients that work to stimulate collagen as well as firm and lift skin,” says Beverly Hills-based skincare guru, Sonya Dakar. She recommends using vitamin A at night and vitamin C during the day.

3. Sunglow? Just say no!

We all adore that sun-kissed, jet-setting look (aah!). The bad news, however, is that your copper tone comes at a cost: your skin.

UV rays produce oxidizing free radicals that can damage the DNA and structural collagen in the skin, leading to skin cancer and skin aging, explains Dr. Shainhouse. “I tell my patients to consider their skin as white bread. Once you toast it, it will never be soft and white again, even if you never burn it,” she says. “Yes, you can scrape off the top layer of hard brown crust, but the bread will never be the same.”

Sunscreen makes the biggest impact on your skin,” says Beverly Hills dermatologist Dr. Ava Shamban. UVA rays cause photoaging and account for 80% of skin aging, according to a study published in Clinical, Cosmetic, And Investigational Dermatology.

Fortunately, you don’t have to choose between a sunny glow and skin health (thank goodness). Eva Longoria swears by EMK products to protect her bronzed olive skin. The Summer Glow Prep Set is a two-step skin care system that brightens and tones while giving you a natural hint of color.

4. Retinol to clear your complexion

Known as nature’s botox, Retinol is among the top celebrity-approved skincare tips. It’s essentially a form of vitamin A which is a powerful antioxidant, explains Beverly Hills dermatologist Jason Emer, MD.

This superhero rejuvenating ingredient exfoliates the skin and helps produce new collagen.

“It is important to use it every day,” says Dr. Emer. For beginners, he recommends starting with a lighter dose of around 0.05 percent and increasing the dose as your skin adjusts. The EMK Anti, Aging Rescue Serum, contains retinol and other invigorating antioxidants obtained from Tea Tree Leaves, the Shiite Mushroom, and Sea Kelp.

5. Never squeeze big pimples

Resist your urge to purge (hard as it maybe). Dr. Shainhouse explains that when you burst the pimple by squeezing the skin, you are creating a tear in the skin. When it heals, it can leave a scar.

Large, boil-type pimples are best treated with medicated acne products to heal inflammation instead of injuring your skin with invasive popping. The Antidote Acne-Drying Solution by EMK detoxifies and settles breakouts, using maximum strength, all-natural and gentle sulfur, salicylic acid, and zinc.

6. Clean skin, please

Never underestimate the power of a clean face (sounds motherly, we know). But just ask Sonya Dakar who swears by this #1 non-negotiable tip: “never go to bed without washing your face,” she says.

Making a habit of hitting the hay with makeup on can lead to collagen breakdown and premature aging of the skin. Even when you’re exhausted, taking the time for your PM cleanse is crucial to remove the makeup, dirt, and everything else that’s sitting on your skin. “This will not only work to prevent unnecessary breakouts, blackheads, and clogged pores but will allow your products to work better,” she explains.

Following these simple reliable remedies will help you achieve a pampered complexion.
