I don’t know about you, but I seem to have perpetual piles at both the top and bottom of our staircase that need to be taken either upstairs or downstairs. I use the pile method rather than making 127 trips up and down the steps each day, but the piles themselves are ugly and distracting.
Although I highly recommend the laundry basket clean-up method, having a laundry basket sit in both places isn’t exactly practical or beautiful either.
An alternative to both piles and laundry baskets is to use a simple basket that matches your decor as a catch-all on the steps. Sturdy baskets with handles work the best because you can just grab them and carry them with you whenever you make the trip up or down. To make the system even easier, use two interchangeabe baskets – one at the top and one at the bottom – so that you can carry the upstairs basket up, empty it and replace the basket at the top when you take that one down to be emptied as well.
Using baskets to minimize clutter is a great way to incorporate practical, functional items in your home decor! And as Aby from Simplify 101 mentioned during last week’s podcast, using open containers to organize makes it really simple to just drop something in, which means we’re more likely to actually use them.
Do you have a trouble spot in your home that invites piles? Could you use a basket to contain the clutter?
