If you’re just joining us, be sure to start at the beginning of the 31 Days to Your Goal series!
We’re 8 days or just about a quarter of the way through the month. How are you feeling about your goal so far? Are you motivated to make it happen? Are you feeling discouraged?
Sharing a goal publicly — at the dinner table with your family or friends, on Facebook or on your blog, for example — can be the extra motivation you need to stick with it even when you don’t feel like it. But sometimes, sharing a goal publicly can be demotivating too, so I think the key is to know yourself well enough to decide whether sharing will help.
Some of this depends on how personal or concrete the goal is. I often set launch dates publicly, I love a good challenge, and I’m feeling pretty motivated this year by sharing my #1000miles in 2013 goal on Facebook and the blog, but I don’t necessarily share goals that have to do with relationships, emotions or my vision for my business.
The other thing to consider is who you’re sharing the goal with. We all have people in our life who are discouraging or negative, so they may not be the best people to share with. Choose your audience — whether online or offline — carefully before making your goal public. (Did you know you can control who on your friends list sees your status updates?)
One caveat — if you’re not sharing a goal because you’re not sure you can stick with it, you either need to a) rethink your goal and make it more realistic, b) share it for the extra motivation or c) commit to actually doing it rather than being wishy-washy about your goal. It’s hard to achieve a goal you’re not really committed to achieving, so back up and reevaluate it if that’s where you’re at!
Have you shared your goal publicly? I’d love to know what it is if you’re sharing!
