It wasn’t until we spent 9 months living in my parent’s basement that I realized how much light affects me. I’d never experienced “typical” seasonal affective disorder during the winter, but looking back, it’s clear that I fell into a depression from the lack of sunlight during that season, despite our attempts to get outside regularly and spend time upstairs.

In the end, we decided that the only solution was to move out – even though we’d planned to stay while we built our house. So, with a 1.5 year old and colicky newborn, we moved into a townhouse with natural light, and I felt better almost immediately.
