Using Flags to Make Easy Themed Cupcakes

My 3-year-old daughter loves Go Diego Go. She spends her afternoon quiet time pretending she’s Diego, and her imaginary Baby Jaguar is her constant companion.

She’s been saying for months that she wants a Go Diego Go birthday cake for her birthday, but I didn’t have the creativity or time this week to make one (although Jessica at Life as Mom’s cakes always inspire me to try!), and I’m not keen on spending $30 for a themed cake from the grocery store, especially because we have multiple family celebrations for each birthday.

My mom decided to make cupcakes instead of a cake, and I was hoping to find some small figures that we could put on top of them, but then saw these adorable cake flags on The Inspired Room’s Tumblr, and I knew it was the perfect solution.

Using Photoshop (but really, you could do it in Paint or Word or a variety of other programs), I filled the page with horizontal diamond shapes. I then searched for “Go Diego Go clipart” and found this page of clipart from Disney Clips. I selected a few of them to use, resized them to fit within the diamonds and created mirror images so both sides of the flag would have a character.

We filled the page with character flags, printed the page, cut out the diamonds and used a glue stick to wrap them around a toothpick before sticking them in the tops of the cupcakes. It was an easy way to add a theme to the cupcakes, and I think they turned out so cute!

What is your favorite way to dress up a cake or cupcakes?
