This interview is part of our “Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow in the Life of…” series. The interviewees share how their past has shaped who they are today as well as who they hope to be in the future. If you’d like to participate, just send me an email at [email protected] and I’ll send you a questionnaire!
Today’s interview is with Sam of Holistic Health Blogger:
1. Looking back on your childhood, what events do you think shaped who you are today?
Well, I still am a recovering middle child. I was fiercely loved, but often overlooked as one of three natural children in a huge foster family. Crisis seemed to be a part of day to day life, so I developed independence, determination and possibly some attention seeking behaviours.
I still carry those traits with me and, as an adult, part of my growth has been to learn to lean on others and to allow my value to come from who I am, not what I do for other people.
2. Were you always a self-help geek?
I remember my mom taking a psychology course when I was twelve and coming home, excited about her insights and trying to diagnose each of us. It was like a switch had been flipped when I realized that there was a reason for why we do what we do. I was hooked! I got my Bachelor’s in Psychology and my Master’s in Counseling by the time I was 23.
As a life coach and counselor, I love peering into the world people have created for themselves and then seeing past it to the gift of who they are. When I can connect to their core, they come alive. It is like seeing the birth of a newborn, but far less messy.
3. How would you describe yourself today?
Quirky, intense, playful, curious, spiritual, in love with nature, focused, creative, and slightly disorganized.
4. What do you most love about your life?
I love it all! I love the possibility. I love being a mom, which has been the biggest growth spurt by far. I love being a wife. I love coaching clients, students and teaching at our local college.
I love the freedom I have to try new adventures, whether it is checking out a new hike, taking a road trip, or trying a new eating escapade. (The raw food, thus far, was the most interesting!) I am curious by nature and love to explore.
It doesn’t matter if I am applying this to my children or to understanding a bad habit I am trying to kick: I am continually intrigued and amazed at life. To pick one part is impossible because each moment has a unique quality that seems like it is the best part of my life.
5. What would other people be surprised to know about you?
That I am a recovering junk food addict. Although I have always had a mad crush on anything natural and dreams of one day being athletic, I used to live on drive-thrus and sweets.
This is why I decided to blog in the health area, because I had seen so much transformation in other areas of my life, and I wanted to bring that respect and love towards my body and overall health. It has been amazing. Every month I grow in my relationship to food, exercise, my body, and my thinking about health, and I get to share this journey with my readers.
6. Where do you see yourself in 5 years? 10 years?
5 Years- Rocking the Mommy role still, just no diapers and finally sleeping through the night. Still blogging & coaching, but I would like to also throw in speaking and some serious/or not-so-serious writing.
10 Years – More of the glorious same, but maybe more organized or maybe not.
7. What legacy do you hope to leave behind?
I want a huge legacy, but for it not to be about me. I don’t really care if anyone, beyond my children, remembers my name. I want ‘who I am’, to impact who my children are, who my friends, family, clients and readers are. I want that slight ignition in others, to ripple into the lives of their friends and family, and for people to live a more deliberate life because of it.
